New photos show latest work on oil rig that collapsed on North Slope tundra

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Response crews are continuing cleanup and recovery work nearly two months after a drilling rig was damaged during a move on Alaska’s western North Slope, with most of the structure now removed from the site, according to Doyon Drilling Inc.

The company said Friday that crews are in the second phase of the response to the Jan. 23 incident, which is focused on dismantling and removing the rig from the tundra.

As of March 19, about 76% of the rig had been recovered and transported away from the site, the company said. Workers are continuing to inspect and take apart the rig’s substructure, while cutting metal on the side farthest from the road and hauling away debris and dismantled sections.

Doyon said the dismantled equipment is being decontaminated at the site before being moved elsewhere for further cleaning and recycling…
