72 campers, 2 dogs rescued from campgrounds in Makaha

MAKAHA, Hawaii (Island News) — Dozens of people, including pets, were rescued from the Our Lady of Keaau campgrounds in Makaha during severe storm conditions on Friday.

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a 911 call at 12:41 a.m. for campers in need of rescue at Our Lady of Keaau located on Keeau Homesteads Road, and multiple HFD units were dispatched to the Makaha camp site. The first unit arrived at 12:24 p.m. and found a group of 72 campers and two dogs in need of evacuation due to hazardous weather conditions.

The campers were gathered and relocated to a nearby area to shelter in place. Campers were airlifted out of the area to Waianae Intermediate School for safety. The Hawaii National Guard also assisted in aerial resources to airlift campers out of Makaha…
