Univ. of Iowa Health Care expands NICU capacity to meet growing demand for critical newborn care

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A major expansion at University of Iowa Health Care’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital is expected to increase access to life-saving care for some of the state’s most vulnerable patients.

Hospital leaders say the newly opened expansion to their NICU adds dozens of beds, increasing capacity from about 87 babies to as many as 111 at a time. The expansion comes as demand for specialized newborn care continues to grow, particularly as more rural hospitals stop offering labor and delivery services.
