Apartment fire on Briarbrook Drive in Wheaton

The Wheaton Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of Briarbrook Drive at approximately 4:22 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026. Firefighters found an active fire on a second-floor balcony that had spread to the third floor and attic. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, and crews stayed for another 90 minutes to complete overhaul and extinguishment.

All occupants safely exited the building, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters rescued multiple pets. The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by improper grill use. The 30-unit apartment building was deemed uninhabitable. The City of Wheaton Building Department, American Red Cross, and DuPage County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management assisted displaced residents.
