If you’re heading down the highway going 80 mph, you might get to your destination a minute or two faster, but it will likely use more fuel, costing you a quicker trip to the gas station. And with gas prices on the rise, it won’t be cheap.

Why driving slower uses less fuel

According to Skyler McKinley with AAA, driving the speed limit uses less fuel in some situations, and in most situations, driving below the speed limit is the most fuel-efficient.

This is because when your car moves forward, air pushes it back, causing resistance. McKinley said the faster you drive, the harder your car has to push through the air. This resistance grows exponentially when you speed, making your engine work harder and ultimately burn more fuel…
