Video: Tour of Staten Island’s Freshkills Park, former landfill site

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island’s Fresh Kills Landfill, the world’s largest trash site, closed in March 2001.

Now, a quarter-century later, following years of a rehabilitation effort, Freshkills Park will play host to an “open house” tour of the massive West Shore green space that has replaced “The Dump” once synonymous with the borough.

According to officials, the event will be hosted by NYC Parks Administrator Mark Murphy, who is leading the park’s development. NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura, Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, Borough Commissioner Joseph Homsey, DSNY Representatives, and members of the Board of Trustees of the Freshkills Park Alliance will be in attendance…
