Near-record highs and strong storms possible Sunday in central Indiana

It was a beautiful start to the weekend across central Indiana, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures yet again rising well above average into the mid 70s for highs. Thanks to a passing warm front, temperatures will remain incredibly mild overnight, with lows only falling near 60 degrees.

The vast majority of our Sunday will feature mostly sunny conditions, with temperatures rising to 81 degrees across the area.

This would be the city of Indianapolis’ first 80-degree high of the year, and just one degree shy of the record high for the day. The current record high for Sunday is 82 degrees, set in 1907.

Sunday evening, a cold front will begin to approach the area, generating the chance for a few strong-to-severe storms. As of now, the timeframe of concern is 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., with the primary threats being hail and strong, damaging winds.

However, the threat of strong-to-severe storms is incredibly conditional. Given the warm temperatures in the forecast, it is possible that we will develop a few showers and isolated storms ahead of the main line. Should this occur, the chance for severe weather would decrease across our region.

Dry weather returns as we move into early next week, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions in the forecast. High temperatures will briefly cool into the low 50s on Monday, before another warming trend kicks off for central Indiana…
