$35 million fraud: Mercer Island CFO gets 2 years for funneling funds into crypto bets

SEATTLE — A Mercer Island man was sentenced to two years in federal prison for defrauding his former employer of about $35 million and funneling the money into risky cryptocurrency investments tied to his side business.

Nevin Shetty, 42, was convicted in November 2025 on four counts of wire fraud following a nine-day jury trial. U.S. District Judge Tana Lin said at sentencing that the losses “had significant and severe effects on the company,” noting the fraud led to layoffs of 60 employees and nearly forced the business to close.

Shetty was hired in March 2021 as chief financial officer of a private software company that had adopted strict policies requiring funds to be kept in conservative investments, according to prosecutors…
