Unison Community Asks for Historic Overlay District

Community members who call the Village of Unison home are asking county supervisors to create a historic overlay district intended to preserve long-standing buildings in the area and maintain its special charm.

The county’s zoning ordinance provides for historic districts as a way to protect historic and culturally significant areas by requiring a certificate of appropriateness before alterations are made to existing structures. Projects involving additions, demolition, new buildings, fences or signs would require a permit, known as a certificate of appropriateness, from the county’sHistoric District Review Committee. Currently, the county has seven historic districts: Aldie, Bluemont, Goose Creek, Oatlands, Taylorstown, Waterford, and Beaverdam Creek Historic Roads.

Supervisor Laura A. TeKrony (D-Little River) last week successfully proposed having the staff begin the process of formulating a work plan and estimating costs to complete the project. TeKrony said the request to establish a historic district came from the village’s residents…
