Local protesters travel hours to rally against ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detention facility

FLORIDA, USA — A controversial immigrant detention center deep in the Florida Everglades is continuing to draw weekly protests — with some demonstrators traveling hours across the state to make their voices heard.

On Sunday, a group of about 55 people from the St. Petersburg area boarded a bus and made the roughly three-and-a-half to four-hour trip each way to the South Florida Detention Facility, often referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz.”

The trip, organized by the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area, The Workers Circle and the Florida Interfaith Coalition, is part of a broader, ongoing effort.
