SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk City Council is opposed to having federal detention centers in the city, and it has decided to send letters to owners of large industrial buildings to ensure they know that.
City Manager Kevin Hughes said at last Wednesday’s City Council meeting that the topic had been broached at other recent council meetings based on “national headlines.” Detention centers have been a topic of contention across the country as Immigration and Customs Enforcement ramps up enforcement and people held in the detention centers have complained of poor conditions.
