Smith: Christianity’s essential role in Western civilization | Opinion

Besides the connection between human value and voting rights, I’m beginning to believe Christianity is the start, foundation, and guarantor of it all. With direct cause, everything important to our Western civilization: our freedoms, rights, and way of business, I believe has a Christian basis. For example, while getting to the standards Jesus established has certainly been an imperfect process, our modern Constitution rests on, and comes closest to the Christian ideal he established. In contrast, past democracies merely represented power-to-power struggles. For instance, while the Magna Carta represented a contest of rights between the king and his barons, the ancient Greek attempt at democracy reflected a degree of equality between grouped interests within the upper echelon. Nothing about the rights of every person, regardless of station or status that Jesus championed as he raised the value of women, children, the poor, and marginalized. Thus, as our Judeo heritage creates a moral basis to social function our Christian roots elevates individual value, the template on which our Constitution rests.

Too, as it laid the foundation for the Constitution, Christianity also preserves it. While the Constitution created a system of check and balances intending to prevent tyranny, all of that goes down the drain if widespread corruption prevails, which invites government intervention. Moreover, concerning political malfeasance, often having to do with a selfish accretion of power by any means, such tyrannical tendency is the antithesis of the Constitutional intent of checks and balances. Yet, as it insists on moral conduct that cares for others — the antithesis to the accretion of power — Christianity, as a check against corruption, helps preserve the Constitution.

Moreover, as part of our cultural character, I believe the Christian ethos also initiates, perpetuates, and safeguards capital endeavor. As a religion espousing individual value and free will, this has lent itself to the entrepreneurial spirit of individual business endeavor and property ownership. However, like good government, depending on honest stewards with the greater good at top of mind, good business depends on fair play and the honest treatment of others. Conversely, when corruption prevails business fails. Thus, with its emphasis on good conduct Christianity also preserves good business, the basis for economic vibrancy…
