Service dog owners facing increased doubt, denial

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A ruff day at work for a few dogs on Friday morning at the JW Marriott hotel in Grand Rapids.

The canines, training to be service dog companions, were learning how to serve their owners in a stimulating public environment, with lots of visual and auditory distractions.

“It’s very important to get our dogs out and be trained in areas that they might experience when they are partnered with one of our clients,” said Becky Canale, the Chief Programs Officer of Paws With a Cause. “Our dogs spend about two years in training to become an assistance dog.”…
