Student ‘Weather-Checkers’ check Staten Island Chuck’s winter prediction

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In recognition of the first day of Spring, the Staten Island Zoo hosted a student event titled “Weather-Checkers” to reveal whether or not Chuck’s prediction of “six more weeks of Winter” was accurate.

In attendance was the Zoo’s Executive Director Ken Mitchell, Richmond County District Attorney Michael McMahon, Citizens Retail Regional Manager Peter Scavone, Susan Wagner High School teacher Robert Fendrick, and students at the high school’s AP Environmental Science Class.

Utilizing the school’s weather station and analyzing streams of data including temperature readings, the students provided meteorological evidence confirming that Chuck’s prediction was accurate.

Mitchell stated, “This program allows the Zoo to use the Groundhog Day tradition and folklore to connect with students for a learning experience about the science of weather. The Zoo began this partnership with Susan Wagner High School in 2023 when the school acquired a working weather station for their environmental science classes. We thank Susan Wagner High School for their teamwork.”…
