DES MOINES, Iowa – Fire crews were called out to a home near Merle Hay Mall early Monday morning on a report of a fire.
A call came in about a fire at a home in the 3900 block of 50th Street at 5:06 a.m., according to Capt. Laura Lyons, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they could see smoke coming from the home. A quick entry was made, and the fire was located in the basement. Capt. Lyons said a firefighter fell through a hole in the floor caused by the fire, but was not injured and continued firefighting operations.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported…
