Before radar, before apps: The March moment that transformed weather in DC

WASHINGTON(7News) — If you love weather or rely on it to plan your life this is a meaningful stretch of days.

On Thursday, we marked the anniversary of the founding of the United States Weather Bureau. And Monday is World Meteorological Day, led by the World Meteorological Organization.

Together both of these days tell the full story of how weather went from local guesswork to a worldwide, life-saving science.

The Start: Weather Goes National

The U.S. Weather Bureau was established March 19, 1870, under the United States Army Signal Corps, using telegraph lines to track storms across the country.

Before that? Forecasting was fragmented, inconsistent, and often too late to matter.
