Chandler mine collapse update – 1 year later

CHANDLER, Ind. — One year after an underground mine collapse shook a neighborhood in Chandler, town officials say the ground has finally stabilized—marking a major step forward in recovery efforts.

The collapse, which happened roughly 120 feet below the surface, was initially described as a sinkhole in early 2025. But it was later determined to be the failure of a coal mine dating back to the 1890s.

That collapse caused widespread damage, including water leaks, gas shutoffs, and structural issues in at least nine homes. In the months that followed, several families were forced to leave, with some losing their homes entirely…
