Rodent commonly found in Kansas causing damage to lawns

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A common animal in Kansas is causing damage to lawns in Wichita.

Voles, small mammals similar to mice, are very common here, but it’s rare to see one. They have smaller tails than mice and are typically found outside.

Voles eat vegetation and create above-ground tunnels to get to where they want to go, causing damage to grass and gardens.

“This right here is a great example of what we might see when we experience vole activity. You’ll see the grass has been clipped off down to the soil level in this area, and then that tunnel will actually go underneath the grass, and underneath the vegetation as it goes back to the colony,” said Matt McKernan, a horticulturist at K-State Research & Extension…
