‘This is a scam’: Fake jail release calls target Sacramento residents to pay through Venmo

(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Superior Court is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers and demand money to secure the release of a loved one from the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Court officials said the scammers instruct victims to send money through the mobile payment app Venmo, promising to help facilitate a release. Authorities emphasized on Facebook that the claims are fraudulent and urged the public not to comply.
