CCSD facing lawsuit over alleged FOIA violation in contentious Education Foundation vote

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The Charleston County School District and its board are facing a lawsuit after a resident claims it violated South Carolina’s open meetings law during a February vote on a nonprofit board appointment.

In a complaint filed March 18 in Charleston County Court of Common Pleas, Dr. Brian McClure claims the school board improperly approved a nominee to the Charleston County School District Education Foundation without proper public notice, in violation of the state’s Freedom of Information Act.

The lawsuit names the school district, board members Leah Whatley, Michelle Leber, Keith Grybowski, Carlotte Bailey and board Chair Pamela McKinney, along with the district’s education foundation, as defendants…
