Trial begins for Cleveland police detective accused of illegally detaining truck driver in Hinckley

MEDINA, Ohio — A jury trial is now underway in Medina County for Cleveland Police Detective Donald Kopchak, one of two Northeast Ohio officers accused of illegally detaining a truck driver whom they suspected, without evidence, was in the country illegally.

“This U.S. citizen was doing nothing but sitting at a bar,” Assistant Prosecutor Scott Salisbury said of the victim. “It’s the worst nightmare a man like that could have in America.”

Kopchak is facing two counts of abduction, along with charges of ethnic intimidation and assault. However, the defense claims Kopchak was only following the lead of former Lake County Narcotics Agent Daniel Lajack, who was also charged in connection with the incident…
