High fertilizer prices strains farmers, looms over lawncare companies

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The War in Iran is putting a strain on more than gas prices; fertilizer costs are also shooting up.

“If this geopolitical stuff continues for a long period of time, then it will become very, very hard to maintain any kind of profit margin for anybody that deals with fertilizer,” said Joe Galbraith, Operations Manager at Galbraith’s Landscaping and Lawn Care in Fort Wayne.

Urea is a nitrogenous key ingredient when making fertilizer, according to Todd Davis, the Chief Economist of the Indiana Farm Bureau. About half of the world’s supply is backed up in the Strait of Hormuz, the same blockage spiking gas prices. Farmers buying fertilizer now are feeling their pockets pinch, but soon, everyone who wants a green thumb could be hurting…
