School District of Lancaster approves plan to potentially furlough more than 100 employees

LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) — School District of Lancaster employees learned more than 100 of their co-workers could lose their jobs during a special school board meeting Tuesday.

The board passed its proposal to allow it to furlough 109 employees as it grapples with a $7.5 million deficit. The furloughs would affect 73 employees who provide direct instruction to students, 15 administration staff and 21 employees who don’t provide instruction to students.

State law requires the district to announce its intent to pursue furloughs, though the district said “it strongly desires to avoid furloughing any employees should other measures that are fiscally-prudent and community-centered be available to balance the budget.”
