Rhode Island Energy warns customers about rise in ‘sophisticated scams’

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island Energy is advising customers to stay vigilant after “an increase in reported scam attempts across the state” that involve individuals posing as company employees.

In a press release Tuesday, the utility provider warned customers to avoid sharing any personal or financial information with anyone who can’t be verified as an official Rhode Island Energy representative.

“We’re seeing an increase in sophisticated scams that attempt to pressure customers into making quick payments or handing over personal information,” Vice President of Customer Services Kristin DeSousa said. “We want every Rhode Islander to know that they should never feel rushed or threatened. If something doesn’t feel right when you get an unsolicited call, stop the conversation and contact us directly.”…
