Whitmer pushes back against potential gas tax holiday as prices grow above $4

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Gas prices continue to rise across Mid-Michigan as the war with Iran continues. In Lansing, the average price sits right around $4.15 per gallon, according to AAA. The price is up 20 cents from last week, and over a dollar more than this time a month ago.

State lawmakers have options when it comes to attempting to reduce financial pressure on Michiganders. One potential avenue would be to suspend Michigan’s gas tax, by declaring a state tax holiday for a period of time.

Speaking with reporters in Grand Rapids on March 18, Governor Gretchen Whitmer is pushing back on the proposal.

“One state can’t address all the pressures that we’re feeling because of this war in Iran, but we will continue to do what we can to put money in people’s pockets,” she said. “That’s what we’ve done with you know, as people are filing their taxes right now, many people are getting historic refunds thanks to the earned income tax credit.”…
