Santa Ana’s Cesar Chavez High School has signage covered as renaming process begins

Amid allegations of abuse against Cesar Chavez, a school in Orange County bearing his name is now starting the process to change it.

Cesar Chavez High School in Santa Ana is one of many that are named after the late labor rights leader, whose name is bestowed on schools, parks, plazas, streets, buildings and other locales throughout California and the United States. He also has a holiday named after him – but now lawmakers are looking to officially rename it, with some jurisdictions already doing so.

According to the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), the “deeply concerning” allegations surrounding Chavez has prompted them to begin the process of selecting a new name.

“Santa Ana Unified School District has covered public facing signage at Cesar Chavez High School as it begins the formal process of considering a new name,” SAUSD officials said in a statement. “The district is addressing these matters with care, transparency and respect for the community.”…
