‘It’s fundamentally unfair’: Proposed Kern County sewer rate increase public hearing rejected after split vote among supervisors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Divided opinions on the Kern County Board of Supervisors resulted in the possibility of a public hearing on proposed sewer rate hikes in parts of west Bakersfield getting cut short.

Kern County officials were proposing following the city of Bakersfield’s proposed five-year sewer rate increase plan for county service areas in west Bakersfield.

The annual rates would have gone up from $295 to $475 in the first year, then continue to increase by $100 each year. The plan would have affected 615 properties.

This increase is being proposed because customers in that county service area uses one of Bakersfield’s wastewater treatment plants…
