N.J. officer cleared after man fell to his death

The Hudson County police officer who chased a man as he tried to escape from authorities will not face charges after the man fell to his death down an embankment, officials from the state Attorney General’s Office said.

A grand jury declined to file criminal charges against Guttenberg police officer Brandon Sauerwald after Brandon Lee Ortega, 26, of Mexia, Texas, died during an interaction with police in 2024, officials said.

Ortega’s death was investigated by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability under a 2019 directive that requires all civilian deaths during an interaction with active law enforcement to be investigated and presented a state grand jury to determine if charges are necessary…
