‘Never seen bills like this’: Electricity shutoffs surging in Kentucky

In March, as Louisville climbed out of a frigid winter, Areia Hill took out her phone, pulled up her LG&E bill, and read the total amount due: $692.82.

The three-bedroom, 55-year-old brick house she rents in the St. Dennis neighborhood is hard to keep comfortable. In the winter, heat escapes from the doors and windows, and she can feel the cold draft seeping in.

Since she moved into the house two years ago, Hill has consistently struggled with steep utility bills. She receives disconnection warnings nearly every month, she said, and has been shut off by LG&E multiple times…
