VA family adjusts to ‘new normal’ after boy loses foot in lawnmower accident

Cohen Johnson is a tough little boy.

“He’s a strong, sweet, stubborn boy,” mom Brittney Walls said in a telephone interview with The Progress-Index as she stood beside the 2-year-old’s bed inside Children’s Hospital at VCU Medical Center in Richmond.

As she spoke on the phone, Cohen lay in the bed, cuddling with his prayer bear and other stuffed toys. A photo Walls took of him while talking shows a little boy with a look in his eyes that could be a combination of pain and wonder − the pain of having his right foot and part of his ankle amputated, and the wonder of how he will get used to what his mom calls his “new normal.”…
