Polk County Considers New Housing Facility for Homeless Families

(Des Moines, IA) — Polk County is considering a multi‑million‑dollar temporary housing facility for homeless families, with hopes of opening the site within the next year.

“In many of our shelters, they are doubling up, sleeping on couches, sleeping on cots. This would take a lot of pressure off the system,” said Polk County Supervisor Matt McCoy.

Family shelters across the county are over capacity, leaving many families without a place to stay. McCoy says the county spent about $400,000 last year placing families in hotel rooms…
