Pearland city council denies homeowner’s plan to build small home addition for elderly mother

PEARLAND, Texas — A Pearland homeowner says he’s been left in limbo after the city council denied his request to build a small apartment for his elderly mother, despite earlier approval from city planners.

David Deriso, who has lived in his Pearland home for five years, said he and his family planned to add a modest living space behind their house as his mother’s health declines. The proposed unit — less than 700 square feet — would allow her to move in and be closer to family support.
