Boston Bucket List: Experience steampunk machinery marvels hidden in plain sight

CHESTNUT HILL — The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum gives you direct, intimate access to some of the most jaw-dropping marvels of steam-powered machinery you’ll see anywhere. It’s a unique experience that will make you feel like you’ve been dropped into a steampunk world.

By the way, base admission to the Great Engines Hall is free. But for a fee, you can step onto the machines and check out the secret basement.

Sitting in a weathered stone building across the street from the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, the Waterworks Museum offers a direct, intimate experience. Inside, visitors can check out the steam-powered water pumps that provided water to Boston from 1887 to 1978.
