Greensboro police discuss noise ordinance enforcement downtown

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — As activity downtown ramps up in warmer months, Greensboro police shared their enforcement standards for the noise ordinance downtown.

The City of Greensboro does have a noise ordinance in place that prohibits unreasonably loud and disturbing noises. Breaking that city rule could result in a $50 fine. The ordinance also limits sound to 75 decibels between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. for mixed-use areas like downtown.

Greensboro police say their noise enforcement can be self-initiated if they see something or in response to a complaint. When it comes to cruising, Downtown Patrol Captain Marcus McPhatter said officers know it’s a problem, and often addressing it is at the discretion of the officer.

“If we see a car do a lap, … we may not do anything at that time. But if we see a car do a second lap, that car may need addressing,” McPhatter said.
