KFD warns of burning rules following Mechanicsville brush fire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Fire Department is reminding people about the city’s burning laws after firefighters put out a brush fire in the Mechanicsville area early Thursday morning.

KFD shared photos of the fire along railroad tracks in Mechanicsville. Officials said the fire spread quickly and firefighters remained on-scene for several hours to fully put out the flames.

KFD said open burning is illegal within the city. Under the city’s guidelines for burning, the fire must be 25 feet from a structure or combustible substances, flames cannot be taller than 2 feet or wider than 36 inches, it must be in an approved container or surrounded by brick, no trash can be burned, an extinguisher or hose must be nearby and it must be looked after…
