New Yorkers owed nearly $10 billion in unclaimed money: You may be one of them

NEW YORK (PIX11) — New Yorkers have left nearly $10 billion on the table in unclaimed funds, and you may be one of them.

Over half of the $9 billion total funds stem from New York City, at over $5.8 billion. Long Island residents are owed over $1.14 billion as well.

The State Comptroller’s office can release money directly if the amount owed is $250 or less.

How to check if you’re owed money in New York

Types of unclaimed funds accounts include:

  • Bank Accounts – savings, checking and CDs
  • Court Funds
  • Dividends
  • Estate Proceeds
  • Insurance Benefits/Policies
  • Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds
  • Telephone/Utility/Security Deposits

You can use the unclaimed property search page on the comptroller’s website, inserting your last name or the name of your business. To refine your search, you can insert your city, ZIP code and property ID.
