South Austin skeptical of Mopac toll lane expansion

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The future of a plan to expand Mopac in South Austin remains in limbo following an open house this week, where dozens of people opposing the project showed up. The Mopac South Project could add a toll lane in each direction of Mopac from downtown to Slaughter Lane, but the proposed expansion still has years of work if and when it would break ground.

At an Open House at Bowie High School on Tuesday evening, it wasn’t easy to find someone fully on board with the current proposed plan to expand Mopac South of downtown. There were a lot of people who showed up to voice their concerns about the project.

“I recognize that there is a traffic and infrastructure issue. The issue that I have, though, is that there are other implications for this project, whether it’s noise pollution, air and water pollution, the fact that they’re going to be expanding the roadway over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone,” said Travis Holler.

“Took me almost 45 minutes to get here today, and that’s about eight and a half miles.”

As a Zilker resident, Travis Holler doesn’t make the drive to southwest Austin during the evening rush hour very often, but he did on Tuesday to learn more about Mopac South and was shocked it took him 45 minutes to drive the eight miles to Bowie High School…
