NCDOT approved to move forward with newest plans for I-26 connector despite concerns

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has received approval to move forward with the newest plans for the Interstate 26 Connector project, according to an NCDOT release.

The Federal Highway Administration has reevaluated the plans for the northern section of the project, which spans from the Haywood Road/Interstate 240 Interchange to the north end, due to revisions that have occurred since the Record of Decision was issued in 2023.

As previously reported, in June 2025, Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer and Buncombe County Commission Chair Amanda Edwards called on NCDOT to reconsider the plans for the eight-lane flyover, saying the community still opposes it and wants the plans to be revised…
