Machete Robbery on Shelby Avenue as East Nashville Woman Held Up for $70

A stretch of Shelby Avenue turned into a crime scene when a woman was robbed at machete point on the 200 block in East Nashville, authorities said. Detectives later arrested 31-year-old Fred Johnson after tracking a man they say matched surveillance footage of the attack. Investigators recovered the victim’s purse and a black jacket from a nearby trash can and said they found $70 on the suspect, the same amount the victim reported missing.

According to WKRN, court documents show the victim positively identified Johnson, and surveillance video helped investigators zero in on him. The filings say Johnson was booked into the Metro jail on multiple charges, including felony aggravated robbery, misdemeanor public intoxication, evading arrest, and disorderly conduct, and his bond was set at $83,500. WKRN also reports that Johnson made incriminating statements while being questioned and that officers recovered $70 in cash at the time of his arrest.

How Police Say They Tracked the Suspect

Detectives reviewed security video from the scene and, according to court filings, located a man nearby wearing the same clothing seen on camera. The victim later made a positive identification. Officers say the black jacket found in a trash can was tied to the purse taken in the robbery.

Charges and the Tennessee Law in Play

The presence of a machete escalates the case. Under Tennessee law, taking property while armed with a deadly weapon can be charged as aggravated robbery, a serious felony. As outlined in Justia, aggravated robbery covers robberies accomplished with a deadly weapon and is frequently prosecuted as a Class B felony. Court documents reviewed by WKRN list aggravated robbery among the charges against Johnson.
