Rising costs threaten future of St. Petersburg ‘First Friday’ monthly event

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WLFA) — The future of a popular monthly block party that draws thousands to Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg is now uncertain as organizers face rising costs and dwindling support.

“First Friday,” a long-running event produced by Nightlife Productions, LLC, is at risk of being canceled in the coming months, according to organizers.

David Lay, owner of Nightlife Productions, LLC, said city-related expenses — tied to hosting the event  —have risen sharply.

“City costs were anywhere from 38 to $4200. Now they’re running from 56 to almost $7,000,” Lay said. “The problem with that is sometimes we don’t receive the bill for six months. So, we have run bills for six months with the city not knowing that we’ve had all these increases.”…
