El Salvador man convicted in 1997 killing of new father, man celebrating birthday in DC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Nearly 30 years after a double homicide in D.C., a 47-year-old man was brought back to the U.S., where he was convicted.

On Aug. 9, 1997, an El Salvadoran man named Oscar Diaz Romero, aka Oscar Alonzo Salguero, went out with several friends. The group was hanging out on the 2nd floor of the then-Las Rocas restaurant in the 2400 block of 18th Street, NW. Just before 2 a.m., a group of young men entered and a fist fight began.

During the fight, Diaz Romero pulled out a revolver and fired several times, killing two men. One round hit and killed Jose Molina, a 22-year-old father of two. Another round hit and killed Jose Coreas, who was out celebrating his 22nd birthday. Diaz Romero then fled the scene and the country.

In 2024, he was arrested in El Salvador and brought back to the U.S. in January 2025…
