VIDEO: This historic West Michigan bridge rose from the dead

IONIA COUNTY — Reduced to a smoldering memory on the Flat River, one of Michigan’s most storied crossings rose from the ashes.

Tucked 25 miles east of Grand Rapids in Keene Township, the rebuilt Whites Bridge is a faithful replica of the state’s oldest surviving covered bridge before arson claimed it in 2013.

The secluded crossing welcomes vehicle traffic, wanderers and river-watchers alike with its old-time charm and a brand‑new lease on life. A boardwalk extends to the water from a small gravel lot for fishing, kayaking or riverside viewing.
