New UT mascot, Smokey XII, to debut in Orange and White game

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Get ready to meet Smokey XII, the new mascot for the Vols.

The dog is scheduled to officially debut on Saturday, April 11, at the Orange and White game in Neyland Stadium.

The two-year-old Bluetick coonhound’s real name is Neyland. He is being fostered at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, which has helped him become accustomed to rowdy crowds and game day environments.

“Neyland, aka Smokey XII, might just be Vol Nation’s most heartwarming walk-on success story,” said Paul Plummer, dean of UT’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “This beautiful Bluetick Coonhound has found his forever family on Rocky Top. With training support from devoted students and expert guidance from the nation’s best veterinarians, Smokey XII is ready to meet his new Volunteer family and bring excitement to fans everywhere he goes.”

The dog impressed his medical team with his “adaptability and eagerness to learn,” UT said. The school is working with the Hudson family — the stewards of the Smokey tradition — for Smokey XII’s long-term care…
