Throwback Thursday: Francis Gale Carpenter

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On this edition of Throwback Thursday, Lori Kent with the Local Lou Podcast tells us about Francis Gale Carpenter.

“She was born in Albion, New York, in 1845, but she died here in Sioux Falls in 1925. So, let’s talk about that time in between. It’s really interesting because her brother is Artemis Gale, and he’s the guy who kind of starts it for this family. He comes out here. He’s one of the first land speculators to show up. He buys a bunch of land, and once it looks like Sioux Falls is really going to become a thing, he’s like, ‘You guys should come out here,” said Kent.

“So Francis comes here. She buys a ton of land, and it’s so cool to see her name in the newspaper. It’s not her husband, it’s her, and she is buying land all over Sioux Falls.”…
