Bernalillo County gets $6.3 million to start 4th St. road diet project

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque road project years in the making now has the green light to get started. Bernalillo County received more than $6 million in funding this week to begin a road diet in the North Valley in hopes it will make streets safer.

4th Street is one of the main roads through Albuquerque’s North Valley, but for years, Bernalillo County said it has lacked lots of features, including proper sidewalks and drainage, from Ortega Road to Alameda. “There’s lots of nuisance ponding because everywhere in the valley, the whole valley north and south is just flat, and so there’s really nowhere for water to go unless there’s a drainage,” said Rodrigo Eichwald, Engineering Program Manager from BernCo.

Now, Bernalillo County is preparing the area for a facelift. This week, the county received more than $ 6 million to start a road diet. “We’ll be going from four lanes to three lanes, except there will be one lane in each direction and a turn lane that’s for both directions,” said Rodrigo Eichwald…
