Costco to open first U.S. store on tribal land in Scottsdale

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — A new Costco warehouse is coming to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, described by leaders as a milestone project along the busy Loop 101 corridor in Scottsdale. The store was approved on March 11 and will be built near Pima and Camelback roads on roughly 21.5 acres of SRPMIC land.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is a sovereign tribal nation bordering Scottsdale, made up of the Akimel O’Odham (Pima) and Xalychidom Piipaash (Maricopa), with deep farming roots and a fast-growing entertainment and business corridor along the Loop 101.

Plans call for the 162,000-square-foot warehouse to be designed to serve both nearby neighborhoods and the heavy traffic that moves through the area.
