Las Vegas — Deon Baber, a 53-year-old local resident, met a tragic end on March 14 when his motorcycle veered off course on the Desert Inn Road overpass and sent him tumbling onto Interstate 15 below.[1][2] His siblings, now channeling grief into action, argue that taller walls could have contained the bike and saved his life. Their petition, which has gathered more than 300 signatures, spotlights a potential vulnerability in the city’s busy infrastructure near the Strip.

Just after 6 p.m., Baber rode his 2022 Suzuki GSX1300RR eastbound on Desert Inn Road east of South Polaris Avenue. Authorities reported he traveled at a high rate of speed and failed to navigate a left curve.[2] The bike struck a concrete jersey barrier less than 3 feet tall along the south side of the overpass.
Ejected from the motorcycle, Baber cleared the barrier and fell onto the northbound lanes of I-15. He slid into a concrete wall on the east side of the freeway and suffered fatal blunt force trauma injuries. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The incident marked the 29th traffic fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction that year.[2]

Deon Baber grew up in Las Vegas among six siblings after the family relocated from Arizona.
