Rabbi and son get probation, fines for vandalizing swastika mural

MILWAUKEE — A rabbi and his son who were accused of vandalizing a mural that intertwined a Star of David with a swastika get probation and fines.

74-year-old Peter Mehler pled no contest while his 43-year-old son Zechariah pled guilty to a single misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property as party to a crime, which was downgraded from a felony charge for each.

Prosecutors alleged that the Mehlers were caught on surveillance cameras using an ax and a sledgehammer to tear down the mural at Holton and Locust Streets on Milwaukee’ east side on the night of September 14, 2024. They returned the following night to spray black paint on the mural…
