Greater Birmingham Humane Society raises concerns about proposed data center

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is worried a proposed data center could hurt the animals it shelters.

The Birmingham Zoning Board held a packed meeting on Thursday concerning a proposed AI factory by Netherlands-based company Nebius. The facility would be built along Lakeshore Parkway, near where the Humane Society is constructing a new campus.

Noise concerns

Concerns about the possible data center include property value and environmental issues, but for the Humane Society, it’s the noise.

β€œThere are a lot of studies that show a continuous hum at certain decibels is extremely stressful for dogs, and it can cause them to have reactions. That can also make them not adoptable because people are gonna perceive that as possibly aggressive behavior,” said Allison Black Cornelius, CEO of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society…
