Fugitive in 1988 $1.3M heist dies under alias in Asheville hospital

Federal investigators say John Anthony Quinn, a fugitive wanted for a $1.3 million armored car theft in 1988, has died of natural causes while living under an alias in Asheville, North Carolina. Authorities confirmed that Quinn, who had been using the name Jim Klein, passed away in a local hospital in December 2025. The FBI and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation identified him through fingerprint records. Quinn had been on the run for decades and was featured on “America’s Most Wanted” and “Unsolved Mysteries.”
